Preston's College marketing

Preston’s College

Located at the heart of Britain’s newest city, Preston’s College has a bustling campus with 17,000 students. In 2013 they began a major restructure and repositioning exercise. A new leadership team decided to focus on being an ‘enterprising college,’ with the aim of  making every student work ready. This sets it apart from traditional educational establishments. Not only do students leave with qualifications but also with skills in critical areas such as presentations, budgeting and time management.

To launch its new direction, Preston’s College needed a new agency not only to rebrand and reposition it in the hearts and minds of the community, but also to help manage the change through the college, its team and students.  Apparatus was selected to manage Preston’s College marketing after a lengthy tender process involving many North West agencies because of our experience in the education sector; our strategic capabilities and our creative pedigree.

What we did

Working with the in house marketing team, Apparatus has been managing all marketing, creative and digital requirements for Preston’s College since January 2013. This has included:

  • Rebrand – new name, new logo, new corporate identity, brand guidelines, brand management. Once completed we oversaw PR for the new identity which achieved press coverage to the value of £184,463 and an audience reach of 1,151,000.
  • Website – new website for Preston’s College which has increased online interaction by 44%. Introducing the in house team to WordPress has enabled them to quickly take over the new site and also provide access to College departments to ensure that the site is constantly up to date and gaining traffic.
  • Prospectus – after a period of market research, this was started from scratch. Not only did we redesign it but we also rewrote content and improved navigation. Follow up research agreed unanimously that it was a significant improvement on previous prospectuses and was more professional and easier to use than the prospectuses of other local colleges. We are now busy creating the 2014 prospectus.
  • Advertising – an above the line was developed based on the college’s star students to challenge historic perceptions of the college’s reputation and send message of success into the community. This was underpinned by digital advertising campaigns using Google and Facebook.
  • Year 11 campaigns – in addition to producing the prospectus, we are responsible for the lifecycle of the Year 11 communications. We base this on a classic acquisition, conversion, retention strategy ensuring that students are attracted to the college and remain engaged throughout the year. We use a mix of direct marketing and social media to manage this cost-effectively and in a tightly targeted way.
  • Signage and wayfinding – the new identity needed to be properly integrated throughout the campus. This gave us the opportunity to address pathway and access issues and plan for the many new buildings that are under construction.

Paolo Marchetti

Paolo Marchetti Interiors is a retailer of bespoke fitted furniture with stores in London. It is owned by the large Russian retail conglomerate, Mr Doors.

What we did

When they decided to open their Paolo Marchetti Interiors stores in London in 2011, Mr Doors contracted Apparatus for 2 years to manage the launch and train their Russian team to understand the UK retail marketplace. They outsourced all of their marketing to us. This included everything from identity and store design, through to market research, website development, digital marketing, press launches, promotional gifts, advertising, brochure production and copywriting. Working with their team in Moscow, we helped them to identify and understand the UK consumer, targeting the appropriate demographic for their offer. We also worked with them to physically launch the retail spaces to customers and the UK press. After 2 years, they felt confident enough to manage their marketing from Moscow, although we still remain on hand for strategic advice and consultancy when they need us.

Triscan

Triscan is one of the UK’s leading fuel management companies. Managing both the fuel management software and hardware for large haulage fleets such as Asda and John Lewis, it helps its clients to cut costs and carbon emissions.

What we did

Triscan was going through a period of investment and expansion. Having gained a number of large national clients in a short period of time, it was growing exponentially and needed to outsource its marketing. Between 2010 and 2014, we worked as their external marketing department, managing all of their strategic, print and digital requirements.  This included designing and building their website, creating and writing brochures, running PPC campaigns, building exhibition stands and running online marketing campaigns. Their turnover grew by over 200% and they continually smashed their sales targets during this period. In 2014 the company was acquired by a new group of investors who were able to provide in-house marketing support. We are very proud of the impact that we had on Triscan’s business and are delighted to see them continue to thrive.

Lancaster Royal Grammar School

LRGS is a nationally acclaimed school, known for its strong academic and sporting success. In addition to needing a suite of strong communication tools for boys and parents, it also needs to continue to influence stakeholders and third parties including alumni, government, peer education providers and potential sponsors and funders of educational programmes.

What we did

We were appointed to help LRGS segment its target audiences and communicate with them accordingly. We produced a new suite of communication pieces for students and parents both present and future which included prospectuses; boarding house brochures; videos; web design; web usability assessment and planning user journeys through the site. We also created the material for their major fundraising campaign the ‘Plan For Renewal.’ This included direct mail pieces for alumni and benefactors along with videos for use at speech days, open days, fundraising dinners and conferences.
